Sober living (also called a recovery residence) is a substance-free, structured home for people in recovery from addiction. It sits between clinical treatment and fully independent living — residents hold jobs or attend outpatient programs while living under house rules, peer accountability, and (depending on the level) an on-site house manager.
Treatment programs (detox, residential, PHP, IOP) provide licensed clinical care. Sober living does not provide clinical treatment — it provides housing and structure for people who have already started or completed treatment, or who need a stable, substance-free environment while they engage with outside clinical services.
“Halfway house” is often used for court- or corrections-run reentry housing, while “sober living” / “recovery residence” usually describes privately or nonprofit-operated peer-based housing. In practice the terms overlap a lot; what actually matters is whether the residence is independently certified against a real standard — in Tennessee, that standard is TN-ARR / NARR.
No. NARR defines four levels of support, from peer-run (Level 1) to a fully staffed, clinically integrated setting (Level 4). Since January 1, 2026, Tennessee law (Public Chapter 406) has required recovery residences to be certified before they can represent themselves as meeting the standard to referring providers, courts, and payers.
Treatment programs, hospitals, courts, probation/parole, and case managers typically make the referral. Certified residences like Rise Recovery Residences admit through these supported referrals rather than self-find walk-ins, which keeps clinical and support needs connected to the people already working with the resident.

RiseTN admits through supported referrals. Ask your treatment provider, case manager, discharge planner, or caseworker to refer you — it keeps your clinical and support needs connected to the people already helping you.
